In recognition of the urgent need to address the preparedness of
the nation's medical and healthcare workers to respond to
incidents involving weapons of mass destruction, the National
Health Professions Preparedness Consortium (NHPPC) was formed to
facilitate the development of a long-term, focused,
threat-responsive national capability.
This goal will be
accomplished through the development of innovative, distinctive,
and cost-effective curricula and training programs, which will
be deliverable through a variety of venues. The intent of the
Consortium (through use of its members' existing and formidable
infrastructure of training facilities, staff and faculty) is to
work with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as
professional associations to fulfill this purpose.
The NHPPC is composed of members from organizations able to
provide and sustain the operational training, exercise, testing
/ evaluation, and leadership necessary to achieve its purpose.

The NHPPC provides:
- Proven leadership development and delivery of curricula for Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training programs, particularly response preparation for nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) terrorist attacks and other multiple-casualty incidents
- A formal structure to facilitate collaborative efforts among experts from a wide range of disciplines in order to address issues surrounding WMD incidents, public health emergencies, and disaster preparedness
- A capability to design, test, standardize, and implement WMD curricula for a coordinated, nationwide program that encompasses the medical, public health, and emergency medical service arenas
- The production of cost-efficient course materials and instructional / job aids for intended to reach large audiences through distance learning technologies such as web-based, CD-ROM, and telecommunications, as well as courses taught in traditional (classroom) environments
- Experience and expertise in curricula development, revision, and adaptation
- Research / development inclusive of medical, public health, and emergency technologies, as well as multiple-casualty incidents of disaster crisis and consequence management
- Laboratories and sites for research designated to support counter-terrorism and public health emergency requirements
- Experience and expertise in the development and use of simulation and inter-active computer-based training technologies for the creation of virtual environments
- Experience and expertise in the planning for and implementation of multiple-casualty incidents involving WMD and public health emergencies
- Unique and important relationships with leading world experts conducting research involving WMD agents, counter-terrorist response procedures and protocols, and other related areas
